Angel of Vengeance

Taking me 10 hours to paint, I finally got there. Not painting to industry standard yet but I'm working on it. The idea behind this is that the Angel of Vengeance is the only survivor from his company. After running out of ammo this is not enough to stop him, in his wake destroyed Chaos Space Marines lie. I originally went with Tyranids but they did not seem to fit. Also I had some drop pods raining form the clouds but I wanted his solitude to be the focus. Unscathed this marine is in line for a promotion, his attitude remains focused and ruthless - "Serve the Emperor today, for tomorrow you may be dead".

Taking it back to my childhood, I was a big fan of the Games Workshop. I preferred to model and paint the miniatures although I did get into gaming for a while. More specifically I love Space Marines and the whole world of Warhammer 40k I find so fascinating. I was a huge fan of the Blood Angels collecting an entire army (hate to think how much it cost my parents at the time). Anyways more to the point, been looking into some of the fantastic 40k Illustrations and its inspired me to go back to my child hood. I've decided to digitally paint a Space Marine. As there are so many chapters all so interesting deciding which one I found somewhat difficult. Rather than the choice of Blood Angels I was swayed into Dark Angels but after browsing I decided to go with Angels of Vengeance. Here is the sketch for now, colours coming soon...

Samurai Fury (I had a Dream Continued)

Samurai Fury, the name influenced from the RZA more specifically 'Take the Sword Pt.III' (Afro Samurai Resurrection OST), 'Mantis' & 'Holocaust' (RZA as Bobby Digital in Stereo). I'm pleased with the turnout as it is almost exactly how I imagined the character although it is lacking dynamic. I think I may cover this with some action sheets. I struggled with the lighting initially but with some help form the guys at work, they threw in some suggestion on how the character could be more defined through rim lighting etc. This led to me adding two extra lanterns in the background. I wanted the burning red sky to be so vibrant as this suggests the fury with in the character. As for the gun on his arm I was going to add some spent shells on the ground and some smoke off the barrel but the Samurai did not use the gun, he barely use his sword. I wanted his sheer presence to be so dominating because if there had been an suggestion of combat then it would have hinted to what actually happened in the fight, which I wanted to remain a mystery, until next time...

So with my ever lasting influence form Wu-Tang and with the recent release of Tekken 6 I find myself dreaming of a 3 round fight with a brutal Samurai who has a massive Tec Nine attached to his arm. After some blood shed, crazy acrobatics and a funky HipHop beat I manage to tie it at one a piece on the second round. Bruised, bloodied and almost beaten as the beginning of the 3rd kicks off I get this annoying ringing noise in my ear, ah the Samurai has some voodoo magic to throw off my concentration, stunned and disorientated I seize the opportunity for the winning blow, but then I soon realize its my alarm clock that knocked my concentration and so another day begins...

I will probably never know what the result was to the vicious battle but every time I look at this picture, I'll know... It 'aint over punk!

With all the excitement of my new job I've been struggling to post updates! Although I have been staying on top of my personal work. The inspiration that I'm feeding off in work feels surreal, not only am I working on a great project, I'm working with a fantastic team.

In the haze of my dream job I have accumulated a stack of sketches, so I'm doing my best to get them up on here. But for now I'll leave you with an illustration that depicts my life right now.

I'm finally settled into my new home, complete with a spare room studio! Although I have downsized from the garage conversion at my parents home I feel more 'in the zone' in my snug little room. Been keeping the sketches flowing whilst working on Brainfood. I've listed some 'work in progress' with some doodles just for fun. I try to keep my work space as visual and inspiring as possible, surrounding myself with child hood memories, favorite artists and some Wu-Tang! A studio is not complete without some action figures and who better than Batman to watch over my work?

As Bunny and myself have not had chance to discuss our approach to colouring the collaboration piece, I have had the black and white image sitting there waiting to be coloured. I could not resist the temptation. So here it is my half coloured, if we get chance I may re-colour the two pieces as a whole. Well see what happens.

This is what we have come up with so far, as it stands we are both happy with the turn out. We are not sure how we are going to colour it, or even if we are going to colour it? Through the previous design I narrowed it down to this image show above, titled 'Love This Smile', this reflects the order of everyday tasks that I have to follow that reveals a blank expression with a focused goal but deep inside my mind I reveal the liveliness and imaginative outlook I keep locked away in everyday situations. The bubbles coming out of the ear are parts of the elements that would help merge the two pieces.

As we had set no theme to work off, only the template. I sketched a montage on what kind of direction I wanted my side of the piece to go. Through out the ideas stage we did not show each others work, we only discuss possible elements that would link the two pieces. As I did not want to overpower my side of the image with too much detail, I decided this sketch would be too much for our original intentions.

I have teamed up with Jon Bunney a friend from university, we both studied animation and both share a love for graffiti. Our intentions are to create a graffiti mural type design where Jon will design the left side of the piece and I will design the right side. The final piece should out line the contrast in our style yet express our train of thought whilst working from the same basic template.

The work shown above template we worked form. Its basically two heads back to back with a void in the top of the head to encourage a wave of ideas flowing form our characters heads and merging to create a unique collaboration.

Squidy, the boy with the four tentacle squid hooded sweater on, enjoyed painting his imagination, but little did he know that when he painted a picture of his favorite toy robot that it would come to life, dropping bombs everywhere. Squidy knew that if he didn’t push the green ‘OFF’ button on the robots chest in time, his imagination may explode out of control running riot in the city.

I spend the majority of my time looking for work within the creative arts sector. As I am constantly being rejected not because of my standard of work but due to the fact that businesses are not recruiting. I fully understand I am not the only graduate in this position and I am aware that its not only graduates that face the same challenge. Utilising my degree I have designed this poster advertising the Credit-Crunch that Gordon Brown has bestowed upon the nation, making it all the more difficult to sustain a regular standard of living within the UK. Although the current state of economy is no laughing matter I have approached the design with significant comical value. I would like to think that Mr. Brown would take a few moments out of his busy schedule to reflect on the consequences of his actions and see that people like my self are constantly thinking of creative ways to make the best of a bad situation.
